High Antioxidant Pear and Berry Smoothie

This time of year is always super busy. There are Christmas events to go to, family to visit, and, if you’re like me and left things to the last minute, the shops to contend with. Everything is just that bit more stressful.

Another problem with this time of the year is that after all the Christmas preparations are done, I just don’t have to energy to cook. This results in more takeaway. While there are healthier options for takeaway, it just isn’t quite the same as a home cooked meal. I’m starting to feel the affects of not quite enough veggies over the past week or two, so I decided to have a pick-me-up high antioxidant smoothie for breakfast this morning, to try to give me a bit more energy.

The acai berry puree and blueberries provide a huge hit of antioxidants in this smoothie. Berries are one of the highest sources of antioxidants available. Antioxidants latch onto the free radicals in your body and help to dispose of them. The free radicals come from pollution, alcohol and an unhealthy diet, and if you have too many in your body they can cause oxidative stress, which in turn can lead to diseases like cancer, arthritis, heart problems and dementia. Luckily, a plant based diet is a great source of antioxidants. Just remember, the more colourful a food, the more antioxidants it contains!

I make my smoothies in a vitamix blender, but any other blender should work for this recipe. If you have a less powerful blender, you may need to blend for longer. If you are using pitted dates from a packet, you may need to soak them for a few minutes in hot water first.
